Time to get Spring ready!

Writer: gardencompanionmegardencompanionme

It's nearly here! The sun has appeared, buds are emerging and the promise of Spring is peeping around the corner. Happy days! So, it's time to get busy. Out in the garden it's time to cut back those perennials that were left for winter interest eg. long grasses, phlomis heads maybe even the odd dry allium. You may see new shoots emerging at the bases so take care not to hurt these. Clear away dead plant material where those pesky slugs may lurk and consider applying a lovely layer of mulch on your borders to give the soil a boost and to supress weeds. Well rotted manure or garden compost is great or you can source soil improvers from local suppliers.

It's also the time to get sowing with hardy annuals and veg seeds - more of that later.

Don't forget to put all your pruned material on the compost heap and if you don't have one, I urge you to find a corner to build one! There's nothing like creating your own home-grown compost and it saves you a fortune in buying in bags of the stuff, not to mention reducing your carbon footprint and plastic waste.

Here our hens help with the composting process by turning it over and adding their own 'poultry manure' to the mix!
